Beer isn’t quite what it used to be.

“The Archaeology of Beer,” a lecture sponsored by the UNLV Department of Anthropology and the Las Vegas chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), held on campus Thursday, informed its audience of the popular alcoholic beverage’s origins.

Lecturer Christine Hastorf, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, emphasized that the presentation was not about the beer people are familiar with today.

“This isn’t the beer that you drink,” she said. “I hope you’re beginning to tune into the fact that I’m describing not Pabst’s Blue Ribbon. I’m describing old-fashioned beer.”

Hastorf said what is called beer today has evolved from its archaic form and that the process of making beer yielded vastly different results “before we had ice cold beer coming out of the refrigerator.”

She explained that in its early form, beer was quite thick — basically the result of cooking grain in a way that would make it easier to digest.

Many archaeologists believe beer functioned as a liquid meal that gave elderly people and children nutrients.

“The process of producing beer produces a natural antibiotic, so if you drink beer, you’re actually helping your body flush out some bugs or irritants in it,” Hastorf said.

Historically, beer was considered a healthy drink in many parts of the world, but what is now called beer has lost much of the nutritional value the beverage used to have.

But the social aspects of beer drinking have been sustained, Hastorf said.

“People drank beer with friends and neighbors,” she said. “That allows you to have a nice kind of jolly time.”

Archaeologist Jonathan Sauer suggested that the original motivation for domesticating cereal crops might have been to make beer, not just bread.

“Even if this is not strictly true,” Hastorf said, “we do have growing evidence of beer brewing in the archaeological record from around the world.”

Beer played an important role in Mesopotamian rituals, myths and medical practices, and it is believed to have been consumed by all members of society.

In South America, the ceremonies of the Inca included beer drinking, Hastorf said, and maize beer was an important ritual food in the Inca Empire.

Archaeologists have found beer residue in El-Amarna, Egypt, that they believe to be from around 1332 B.C. Hieroglyphics have been discovered in the region that depict the brewing process.

Hastorf said that “transformation” sums up everything archaeologists know about old and new beers.

She claimed that people love beer because it takes time and effort to produce.

“In the end humans are like this,” Hastorf said. “We like things that we’ve created, so turning grain into something else is meaningful to people. That’s transformation.”
