Rolls-Royce in patents battle with engine-making rival

A complaint has been filed against Rolls-Royce by Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp.

Pratt and Whitney filed their complaint in the United States District Court in Connecticut, as a follow-up to Rolls-Royce’s own filing of a complaint against Pratt and Whitney back in August.
Both Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney are long-established makers of aircraft engines and aerospace equipment.

The patent they are fighting over is related to swept fan blades.
Pratt & Whitney claim that Rolls-Royce filed a misleading patent in the US Patent & Trademark Office and say their rival engaged in unfair behaviour to obtain the disputed patent.

The disputed part is used in the PurePower engine family, which will still be sold by Pratt & Whitney while the court case proceeds.

Pratt & Whitney have stated that all production milestones have been met and everything is still on schedule. But they say they want Rolls-Royce to compete with them in the marketplace instead of filing lawsuits.
